Bangladesh University of Textiles, commonly abbreviated to BUTEX. It is a public university in Bangladesh, situated in Tejgaon, Dhaka. It is the only public institution in Bangladesh that teaches textile engineering. This institution has eight (8) government textile engineering colleges. Each of these is the textile Institutes of technology.

Previously, it was known as the “British Weaving School”. It then changed its name to “East Bengal Textile Institute”. Then solely offered diploma courses in the textile production process. In 1957, it transferred to its present campus at Tejgaon Industrial Area. It set its foundation stone by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1960, it started academic activities renamed as “East Pakistan Textile Institute”.

In 1971, the institute was simply renamed as “Bangladesh Textile Institute”. In 1978, the institute launched 4 four-year bachelor’s degree programs in textile technology. It is fully affiliated with the University of Dhaka. It re-branded itself as the “College of Textile Engineering and Technology”.

Then Bangladesh University of Textiles started its journey on 22nd December 2010. It creates new opportunities for higher studies, research, and development in this sector. It has been trying hard to maintain standards for higher education and research. This University will play a remarkable role in upgrading textile education. It will be compatible with the era of globalization. It is a thriving university that focuses on generating and disseminating knowledge. It embraces a global quality assurance mechanism to boost power. It has been possible for research through the deployment of ICT facilities. It has developed a new curriculum that adheres to international standards.

Textile Engineering is a very prospective sector of education in our country. The textile, jute, and Ready-Made Garments sectors are the largest industrial sectors. It helps to earn more than 80% of our export earnings. These sectors are also important for creating employment opportunities and socio-economic development.
